Daily Meditation: See With Fresh Eyes

We all need help maintaining our personal spiritual practice. We hope that these Daily Meditations, prayers and mindful awareness exercises can be part of bringing spirituality alive in your life.

Today's meditation features a poem by 20th century American writer Galway Kinnell, reprinted in The Little Book of Prayers. The poem reminds us that even after the most trying experiences, we might emerge the next day to discover something entirely new.

How Many Nights by Galway Kinnell

How many nights
have I lain in terror,
O Creator Spirit, maker of night and day,

only to walk out
the next morning over the frozen world,
hearing under the creaking snow
faint, peaceful breaths...
snake,
bear, earthworm, ant...

and above me
a wild crow crying 'yaw, yaw, yaw'
from a branch nothing cried from ever in my life.
