A Path to Personal Forgiveness: Defeat the Three Dragons

We are all fence-sitters about both peace and forgiveness. We pick and choose when to fight and when to forgive. We blame the people it's impossible to forgive and make peace mostly with those who already want to make peace.

Why I Quit a Madison Avenue Career and Never Looked Back

"What? You quit a New York City advertising career? And one that was on Madison Avenue -- the Madison Avenue -- of all places?"

Indeed I did.

I chose to leave my first job after college; I wasn't let go as a roomful of higher-ups spoke of necessary cut-backs, nor was a fired in a drama-infused meeting where I pleaded for reconsideration. I wasn't playing the "maybe they'll increase my salary if they get wind of my intention" game either.

I simply wanted out, and I wanted it pronto.

"But think of where you'd be now if you stayed," people say as they reference a decision I made in my early 20s.

That's my point exactly. While "where I'd be now" is probably meant to suggest I'd have a mind-blowing savings account and the ability add prestigious titles to LinkedIn updates, that statement has an entirely different meaning for me. "Where I'd be now" is precisely why I handed in my resignation letter in the first place.

Eight hours of sleep in one week

Early on in my Madison Avenue career, I once received eight hours of sleep in one week -- one week -- when an account was up for review. This was a time where agencies presented their best work to a specific multi-million dollar brand in order to remain (or become) their agency of record. Huge feathers in caps came to everyone working at the chosen agency.

But heading home to New Jersey -- where I lived at the time -- at 2 a.m. only to sleep for about two hours, and then do it all over again left me physically and mentally exhausted. Sure, employees who had to commute in the wee hours of the morning were provided with a luxury car whose driver saw them home safely, but it couldn't undo the numbness that was seeping through my body.

I remember trying to get dressed one morning, but instead of putting on my clothes, I stood naked in front of them, staring. I was in a daze, uncertain of what to do next. Had I just undressed to get ready for bed, or was I supposed to put them on to start a new day? I remembered, and with great effort, I slowly lifted up my underwear and slipped my legs into them. Even that was tiring. I watched a blur of backyard pools and wall graffiti whiz by as I sat on the train to New York's Penn Station one morning, wondering if something was wrong with me.

A whirlwind of sights blurred past me while taking the train to my high-stress job in New York City

The rest of my three years there mostly continued in this manner. The hours weren't as severe as that one particular week, but they were long and often fueled with high-stress levels.

Choosing my sanity over my job

Eventually, it came to a point where my skin would throb and my breathing became shallow just from walking from one meeting to the next. I often felt as though an intense heat would rush over me, then would go away. In one instance, I was so overcome with these feelings, I exited the elevated before my floor. My only mission was to find the closest bathroom. There, I shut the stall door, flopped against the door to support myself, and began hyperventilating. I couldn't get the breaths to come out fast enough.

2015-09-04-1441386674-4344853-sunthroughsilveroakblur.jpg
Enough of the anxiety and stress

I just wanted to breathe and be me again.

I handed in my resignation letter a week later. Within a month, I was working at a public relations firm in a quaint New Jersey suburb. Life since then has been filled with the many things that make careers and life what it is: company closings, CEO retirements, deaths, my own divorce and remarriage and so on. I've been a freelance writer for several years and couldn't be happier.

Don't get me wrong. My time in the NYC advertising world included many enjoyable moments. However, they were overshadowed by perpetual frowns, observations of others' tears and sights of health-fanatics turned chain-smoking, stressed-out insomniacs. I saw the people with the big savings accounts, but also observed that many of them didn't take the time to enjoy the money they had. The street name on a business card might have been impressive, but my mental and physical health was worth much more.

Here's what I've learned -- and in some cases, continue to learn -- about obtaining a work-life balance.

Tips to Thrive in Today's Fast-Paced World:

Resist perfectionist urges
If you're like me and often strive to get things right the very first time or put your all into everything -- from meetings to planning a birthday celebration for a coworker -- learn to let go. Not entirely, just more. Relinquish the need to do it all. Be okay with delegating. Be at ease turning in a project in the day before a deadline rather than putting unnecessary pressure on yourself to complete it two weeks beforehand.

I feel better when I let go, although even now as I work from home, I have moments where the old me seeps in. Then I remember that tomorrow's another day, filled with hours of writing and thinking before me. In the end, deadlines are still met, my articles are still published and no one is offended that I didn't send them an e-card for their birthday.

Take vacations

2015-09-04-1441385813-8687485-11755711_10153418725181071_2454591432154034822_n.jpg
July 2015, traveling on a motorcycle to Niagra Falls with my husband

I've worked in places, even during my post-Madison Avenue days, where not taking a vacation for years was considered an indication of supreme workplace devotion. Not taking owed time off from work was, and still seems to be, promotion-worthy behavior.

However, it's not healthy for the employee or the company; the glorification of a burnout culture is detrimental. We're a stressed society; no wonder more than half of employees leave a job, search for a new one or even turn down promotions in order to avoid work stress.

As with many things in life, it (bills, work, a lawn in need of mowing), it will be there when you get back. Worry less, enjoy more. You've earned vacation days and have every right to take every last day as you see fit. Ignore the furrowed brows that may come when you request time off and make sure to get the rest and fun you need so you can come back to work recharged, relaxed and -- most likely -- more productive.

Remember: productivity over presence

2015-09-04-1441385988-9906759-titleclosing.jpg

At another place of employment, I was essentially told that leaving at 7 or earlier was a no-no, even if all of my work was in a good place. It was explained to me that it just didn't look "cool" if certain higher-ups walked down the halls and noticed a few vacant offices, never mind the fact that they were probably empty because they came in at 7 in the morning, worked through lunch and oh, I don't know, thought it might be good to take a shower and eat at one point.

Focus on productivity more than presence.

Sure, chatting with other employees is important. Sharing laughs and ideas with the boss creates professional and personal bonds. I get that. What I don't get is having to keep my seat warm just so I can flash an "I'm still here" smile or maybe take on a new project at 9 p.m., when my eyelids are drooping and my stomach craves something healthier than Chinese takeout. Again.

Step away from technology and smell the roses

2015-09-04-1441386034-40015-rosepinkwetdetails.jpg

I'll be the first to admit that I'm a cell phone and computer addict. But there's a reason: Just as I enjoy looking at pictures of adorable animals or interacting with friends on social media, I'm also on the Internet scouring for story ideas and of course, seeing what's new in the world. However, while I often do end up with inspirational ideas, I'm also often left mentally exhausted.

I fight thoughts that some new development will take place in the world the moment I put my phone down. So I scroll and scroll, taking in information galore so as to not miss a beat. In turn, my emotions ebb and flow as I read about a shooting one minute and a happy weight loss story the next. Then there's an image of an abused dog; after that, a hilarious meme. It's overwhelming.

For the past couple of weeks, however, I've learned to let go of my phone as much as the notion that I have to meet a deadline days before it's due. I keep my phone charging at an outlet away from my bed, away from temptation. What a difference. It may seem like a minor step, but refraining from checking emails, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and various news sites every other minute have left me feeling more relaxed as I approach every new work day.

Thankful to be in tune to a work-life balance

Away from the incessant "all work and no play" mindset that often pervades the corporate world, I'm still able to pursue my passions, pay my bills, take vacations and explore the world around me -- without sacrificing my health. That's how it should be, no matter where you work.

I'm very thankful that even after all that lack of sleep so long ago, I finally woke up.

Why Going To Church Was A Painful Experience For This Teenage Introvert

As a quiet toddler in 1967 suburban Denver, I didn’t mind an hour in church once a week. It was mostly a chance to wear my special clothes—I remember the particular excitement, one Easter Sunday, of being buckled into a pair of white patent-leather Mary Janes—then roll around seatbeltless in the back of the family station wagon, a white Ford Country Squire with blue vinyl upholstery.

Those oblivious years slowly gave way to a more big-girl awareness of how things worked in the Catholic world: nuns wore black sacks and sat over there; priests wore colorful robes and got to be in charge of everyone; girls wore lace veils for their first communion; only boys could be altar boys and help with mass. And everybody had to sing.

Singing meant opening your mouth and letting other people hear your voice go up and down while you praised God. That seemingly innocent activity unearthed what would turn out to be my two biggest phobias that stuck around well into adulthood: making my voice heard, and telling anyone how I felt.

And that is when I learned to lip-sync.

But there was a different stressor in church that, by the time I was 12 or so, became impossible to avoid: the moment when our fusty old priest asked the congregation to exchange a “sign of peace” with those around them. The standard procedure consisted of a few simple words accompanied by a warm handshake. Once the fringe-and-tambourine Folk Mass Era of the Peace Hug came upon us, however, it was possible to find yourself in an embrace with a stranger. I was too old to hide my face in my mother’s sleeve, and if I found a sudden need to tie my shoe, people would politely wait for me to finish. I could not get around the requirement to grasp the hands of strangers right and left, raise my gaze to about tooth-level, and mumble, “Peace be with you.”

I get it: it’s a part of adulthood, learning how to look another human being in the eye and say hello. What’s the big deal? Well, here’s the thing. Even now, as a 50-year-old woman, I might need months of regular contact with someone before I feel comfortable enough to say a modest “How are you?” and actually mean it, much less say something so personal and heartfelt as peace be with you, accompanied by a clammy handshake or, God forbid, a cuddle. It hinges, for me, on feeling seen by the other person, and not being treated like I’m a piece of furniture they’re politely stepping around on their way to the door. In the case of handshakes, the best ones happen when each of us puts something of who we are into them and we get a moment of friendly recognition in return.

I think I just described how dogs get to know each other at the park.

I learned to fake it pretty well, as most introverts do. It’s easier when you know what’s coming, and church services are nothing if not predictable: there’s plenty of time to breathe into a paper bag and visualize keeping your palms dry. But for me—a lip-syncing pre-teen introvert—church was a place I was beginning to dread. On top of the forced singing and intimacy, it took me away from reading books or bouncing a ball against the side of our house. Instead of working to develop the same inner fortitude I would later use to smile and slowly close the door on people selling magazine subscriptions, I began looking for any excuse (stomach aches were at the top of the list) to skip church altogether.

My mom was more deeply introverted than I was, just not quite as desperate to stay home and play soccer with herself. She could navigate most social situations by standing behind my garrulous father and falling asleep with her eyes open. So when I started begging not to go to church, she didn’t seem to get why I was being such a wuss, nor did she have the skills to discuss what made the budding feminist inside me uncomfortable about our religion or help me get past the painful social aspects of it. My father, on the other hand, didn’t get what my problem was in the first place, and I couldn’t explain it to him while he was standing over me, yelling, “What’s the problem?” His ultimate answer to my behavior—which he could have perceived as either a lack of faith or sheer laziness on my part—was to bear down even harder and sign me up for confirmation classes.

The seven sacraments of the Catholic church, if you’re not up on these things, are baptism, communion, confession, confirmation, holy matrimony, ordination (if you’re becoming a priest), and last rites. The confirmation ceremony confirms you as a full, committed member of the church. It’s kind of a big deal.

My church had two confirmation classes for kids my age. The early class was full of teens eager to go straight to church after school: outgoing, well-adjusted future church-members who enjoyed making flash cards of the mortal sins. And then there was my class, the class that didn’t want to go to church until after they’d watched an episode of Gilligan’s Island, drank a Mountain Dew, and ate a bag of Doritos.

After six weeks of class, on the day before the confirmation ceremony, we all met in the church for dress rehearsal and confession. This was going to be my first confession, and I had no idea what to say. I went over to the cookie table, grabbed a stale pecan sandie, and took a seat in the last row of pews. Kids were lined up along a wall, waiting to go into the confession . . . cabinet? chamber? and speak anonymously to the priest. But to tell him what? Confession seemed like it was for big things, like murder, and more murder, or at the very least the things I imagined the kids in my class seemed ready to admit: cheating on tests and smoking shoplifted Kools behind 7-11. I hadn’t done any of that! What was I going to say that wouldn’t make some fresh-faced young Jesuit priest snicker into his cassock—that I didn’t always put my full effort into my homework? Or worse: what if everyone could hear through the plywood confessional screen that once I had sexual thoughts about a cooked bratwurst wrapped in tinfoil? The idea of telling anything remotely personal to a strange man in a dark box was incomprehensible. But what was the alternative: to lie? Lying to a priest would have turned me into a smoking pile of ash right then and there! My parents would have had to bury me inside a Dustbuster.

I slid a little further down the pew, closer to the door. I was pretty sure I’d stuck around long enough to pretend that I’d already confessed—no one seemed to be keeping track; I hadn’t given my name to anyone with a clipboard; and no one in my class seemed to care. So I scooted all the way down the last row until I was right across from the door to the parking lot. Then I slipped on my coat, walked out into the cold, wet spring afternoon, unlocked my bike, and pedaled home through the slush.

If you are Catholic, you might join my brother in being upset that I did not suck it up and confess and that I went through the confirmation ceremony the next day holding that lie in my throat. I’m sorry. I should have said something. I should have confessed my bratwurst sins as I stood in front of everyone in church, my father behind me blocking the exit while the priest declared me an adult (an adult whose behavior was setting her on a path straight to hell). But I didn’t.

Once I was officially confirmed, we stopped going to church every week—my father said the pews hurt his back, but my guess is that he felt that he and my mom had done their duty. And yet, despite my lack of interest in conforming to his faith, I was curious about what faith itself was trying to explain. He showed me that he knew me better than I thought he did when he bought me two books the following summer, one about astrology and one about dream archetypes and symbols. As we occasionally talked about our dreams and what they might mean, we drew closer in a new way, and I began to develop a mystical bent. Then, for my sixteenth birthday, he gave me a pack of tarot cards. I don’t know what inspired him; a serious Catholic wouldn’t dream of buying his child such an implement of heresy. Maybe it was his way of acknowledging my independence and encouraging me to keep looking beyond the boundaries of the faith we’d both inherited. After he died, I found a few books about Zen Buddhism on his shelves, so I guess he kept looking too.

Dear Dad

I was lucky to grow up spending part of every summer vacation in Fire Island, NY. A ferry ride away from New York City, this special island is one of those magical places that never changes. In Fire Island it could be 1950 as easily as it is 2015. There are no cars, bare feet are encouraged, and riding bikes is the only way to get around. If you need to transport luggage or supplies, you move them around in rusty bright red wagons. Outdoor showers are a necessity of each ramshackled house. Kids compete to sell painted seashells and string bracelets on the dock. If you show up to the local grocery store for morning coffee in anything other than your PJs ... you're clearly a first timer there.

For close to ten years, we spent two weeks each August in that family happy place. We would fly from Chicago, drive to Bay Shore, ferry across, and haul our luggage down the narrow wood walkways that led to either the ocean or the bay. As we got older and summers got busier, filled with summer camp, high school, social life, and obligations, Fire Island became a fond memory instead of an annual tradition.

In the summer of 2011, my Dad declared that we had to rekindle our beach connection.
To Fire Island we went! Everything was exactly the same. Sand everywhere, sun shining, card games, bike rides, beach toys, and a nonstop string of meals together with cherished family friends. We ended that summer in the same contented state we had in summers past.

Two weeks later, my Dad suddenly, terribly, randomly had a brain aneurysm. He was in a coma for 4 days that seemed like years; a dazed time filled with tears, breakdowns, prayer, and panic. We had to say goodbye. We would spend the rest of our lives without him.

I realize as I write, that this is quite possibly a love letter to my Dad. I am writing it from the beach in Fire Island where we have returned for the first time without him. It has taken us four years to be able to come back here, and I realize it's taken me that long to really begin to face my grief... and his absence.

The back story has drama, like every family. But real beauty. My little brother grew up with a variety of disabilities, from dyspraxia, to dyslexia, anxiety, sensory motor planning and integration issues, ADHD and more. He is a terrific kid in so many ways, but he comes with a lot of needs and requires special patience and support. Our Dad was the parent who put his career on hold to be the constant support my Brother needed. He was the only "art Dad" in my 5th grade class. His were the smiling eyes that met mine when I walked in the door every day after school, from 3rd grade through my senior year of high school. My Mom, who has the warmest and strongest heart, works harder than anyone I've ever met, is excellent at most things, and expects that same excellence from those around her. She was never your average PTA Mother... so you can imagine the whirlwind of changes that came about in our family when our Dad was taken from us.

Being a "stay at home Dad" wasn't the only way our Father was unique. He didn't just write me daily letters while I was away at overnight camp; he colored each envelope, included jokes, pictures and themed letters for holidays, special days, and even average days. He didn't just make me listen to the songs he grew up on; he made an entire binder filled with detailed descriptions of why he liked each song and what memories that song evoked. 12 CDs, over 200 songs, each personally "curated" by my Dad.

He didn't just read me bedtime stories to help me fall asleep, he wrote a book for me called "Cloud Hoppers" and made up a special land in the sky ...just for the two of us. He used his imagination to spark mine, and let it run free.

I think of all of these incredible qualities my Dad had as I walk barefoot along the familiar Fire Island paths we once walked down together. I feel him everywhere, so much that I expect to hear him calling my name from the beach.

Last week when we first arrived back in Fire Island we were re-establishing the family account at the tiny island grocery store. The woman behind the register asked why we hadn't been back in four summers. My impulse was to say something like "life got busy" and laugh it off, which is what I would have done if my Mom wasn't there. She however proceeded to tell the truth, and inform this stranger that we experienced a tragic death, and hadn't been strong enough to return to our happy family place until this year.

I ran out of the grocery store embarrassed and angry. Why did my Mom voluntarily tell this woman about the toughest challenge we had been through? Why did she bring up this fact about our lives and choose to open up the deep wound that we'd all worked so hard to heal? I demanded answers. Her response was simple. "Because it happened."

Oh.

I'm realizing now that the strangest thing about grieving for me has been this need to make others feel comfortable when I'm uncomfortable. I find myself automatically responding to "how are you?" by saying "I'm fine" when I'm so clearly not. I leave out details from the sad parts of my day. I change stories and respond to questions with made up answers, because I'm afraid if I said my truth I'd scare people away.

I'm beginning to understand that when I choose to open up and tell people this detail of my life, I only do it in situations where I know I will be supported. Where I know the truest, best, most understanding people are surrounding me, and I wont regret reminding myself of the heartbreak we've endured. I wont regret opening those wounds, and risk opening up my heart.

I'm learning that it's not that I'm worried about making people feel uncomfortable by acknowledging what happened to my Dad, but more that I don't want to acknowledge it at all. I always want to remain my happy self, who sees the glass half full, is excited about everything, and fixes everyone else's problems. But that doesn't make missing my Dad go away.

Even writing this made me nervous. Am I being cynical? Is it depressing? If to you it is, then I'm sorry. Well actually I guess I'm not. I think this blog post/ public journal entry/ love letter to my Dad is my first admission of what I need to do no matter how difficult that may be... to finally learn how to heal.

If you have lost a person in your life, a friend, friend of a friend, a Grandparent, a sibling, a Mom or a Dad, perhaps you can relate to what I'm saying. You can understand the isolation I feel, the sense that no other human can fully understand exactly what I've lost, except for my Dad, and he's gone. On so many occasions I think to myself, if I could talk to him about all of this, he would have the perfect words to give me comfort and wisdom.

So I guess I wrote this to you, Dad... and maybe in honor of our family too. There are generic steps of grieving, I'm told, but I don't think there is any right way. I for sure don't know how. But I think you'd be proud Dad, that we've managed to somehow live, grow, and change without you for four whole years.

I want to tell you that everything I do is for you. You're with me everyday. I hope you know that I miss you every day as much as I missed you the day you left us. Even though four years have gone by, I still am in shock every day my life is going on when yours is not. I wanted to let you know that we're okay, even on the days that really suck, because we know you'd want us to be.

I want to say thank you Dad, on the 4th anniversary of losing you. I love you.
